Stephen Ogden Barnes
Program Director, Australian Centre for Retail Studies
Stephen Ogden Barnes has a BA (Leeds University), an MA in Retail Management (Manchester Metropolitan University) and is currently a Doctor of Philosophy candidate, at Deakin University.
He joined the Australian Centre for Retail Studies at Monash University in 2002 from the UK, where he lectured in retail management and corporate strategy in the higher education sector. Prior to this, his retail career spanned 15 years and has included new store development, retail store management and management development.
As a Program Director at the ACRS, Stephen delivers retail education programs, retail consultancy, seminars, lectures and conference addresses both within Australia, and more widely in the Asia-Pacific region, focusing on global retail trends, retail innovation, multi-channel retailing retail strategy and sales promotion.
Stephen speaks extensively locally and overseas, and has co-authored research paper "Greydollarfella: endangered species or market opportunity?" which was published in the leading US Journal ‘Business Horizons', which focused on the retail mindset of the mature male shopper and was reviewed positively by both The Economist and the Financial Times.
Stephen is regular interviewee for The Age, The Australian, The Herald Sun, BRW, ABC Radio, 3AW and Today Tonight on retail and consumer issues.
Stephen is finalising his PhD at Deakin University, researching sales promotion effectiveness and marketing decision-making, specifically in relation to promotional competitions.
He is also a member of The City of Melbourne Retail Advisory Board.
